New York-based Monaghan sisters Georgina and Una McGeough are gearing up for the release of their debut album as Song Sung. We ask them the BIG questions.
Tell us three things about yourselves?
We are telepathic, tenacious and quintessentially Irish.
How would you describe your music?
Our music is reflective, ethereal and quite anthemic. As children we sang in choirs, so our love of vocal harmonies probably stemmed from singing in a large group of people.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Our musical inspirations span across music, performance art and sound art. We listen to a lot of electronic music and experimental music. We are inspired by visual artists that function as musicians - Brian Eno, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, William Basinski and Laurie Anderson. We are interested in the production of music, the construction of songs and the magic of melody. We have accumulated hundreds of vocal melodies over the last ten years. It's an endless endeavour.
How have you been occupying yourselves during the coronavirus lockdown?
We have been preparing for our upcoming release and having long conversations with the three visual artists that collaborated with us on this project. The British artist Liam Gillick directed the video for our first single Come to the Water before the pandemic. Since we are all based in New York, the process was fairly easy. The Irish artist Padraig Timoney directed the video for our second single Telling Tales while on lockdown in Ireland, and the Scottish artist Douglas Gordon directed the final video for Take Some Time from Berlin. We have been very involved in the visual aspects of the album, which has kept us busy. We were also in daily contact with our family at home, so lots of phone calls!
What's your favourite song right now?
Georgina: I have been listening to the new Massive Attack audio-visual EP Eutopia, so my favourite current track is #CLIMATEEMERGENCY.
Una: I rediscovered this track last month and I have been listening to it a lot - Kik Plate by Twilight Circus Dub Sound System.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Georgina: "This is a weeping song, but I won't be weeping long" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Weeping Song.
Una: "I've seen this happen in other people's lives and now it's happening in mine" - The Smiths, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore.
If you could each only listen to one song for the rest of your lives what would it be?
Georgina: Only Once Away My Son, Brian Eno and Kevin Shields.
Una: Abandon Window, Jon Hopkins.
Where can people find your music/more information?
