Dave Franco has confirmed he will portray Vanilla Ice in an upcoming biopic of the Ice Ice Baby rapper.

The 35-year-old actor, who is to play the 52-year-old hitmaker in movie, To the Extreme, which is named after Ice's debut number one album, said the project is "inching closer and closer to pre-production".

Speaking to Insider, he said: ''We have been in development for a while, but we are inching closer and closer to pre-production.''

Franco reckons the film could take on a similar vibe to his and brother James Franco's 2017 comedy-drama biopic The Disaster Artist,  which told the story of Tommy Wiseau's 2003 low-budget movie The Room.

''With that movie, people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of Tommy Wiseau, but the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was - that's the tone we want for this one as well.''

Franco said he has had several conversation with the chart-topping singer over the last few months, and admits Ice, whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, has been "super helpful".

''Rob is such a sweet and intelligent guy and he's been super helpful in the process of getting all the details correct and making us privy to information the public doesn't know."

''Just talking to him I can't help but think about the rabbit holes I'm going to go down to get ready for the role," he added.
