Behind the music: Greg Tisdall

21-year-old Dubliner Greg Tisdall has released his new single, Am I Still On Your Mind. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Tell us three things about yourself?

I'm 21 years old, from Portobello. I can’t swim. I love cycling with my friends

How would you describe your music?

Justin Bieber on antidepressants. RnB with angsty immature tendencies. At the moment I am focusing on poppy singles. I want to create fun, innocent moments that people can dance to. I have a lot of more emo ballads and weird stuff in my back pocket, but I’m saving them all for a longer project.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I am a huge sucker for cheesy RnB and boyband music at the moment. Anything with an interesting vocal line does it for me. My friends are getting a bit fed up of me blasting Boyz 2 Men and N Sync all the time. That sort of music really helps me with producing. Kevin Abstract has been my biggest inspiration for a while now. More so for his solo albums rather than the Brockhampton stuff. Sticking on his album American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story always excites me and pushes me to keep making music no matter how many times I’ve listened. I love how The 1975 can successfully dabble in a load of different genres too, that’s something I’m striving for.

How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

Online college exams aside, lockdown was a bit of a blessing for me. Performing has always been my favourite part of music so without having that to fall back on I was forced to look at my production and songwriting a lot more critically. I knew I couldn't make any more excuses and just needed to start finishing and releasing songs. The main feature of my lockdown was long video calls with Grubby, who produces my music with me. I put the poor guy through hell getting him to send over countless new mixes of songs with tiny little changes. We have a great system in place now where I can put together the rudiments of a track with guitar, keys and vocals and then I can email him all the parts and he can add all the drums and other parts. God love him though, he needs some amount of patience to put up with me at times. I can be very specific…Shouts out to Cheesmore too! He’s our friend, who spent lockdown in the Netherlands sending us over song parts from there too.

What’s your favourite song right now?

John Redcorn - SiR. It has such a sick animated video too.

Favourite lyric of all time?

American Boyfriend - Kevin Abstract

"My parents wanna kill me, let 'em kill me

I'll finally be on TV"

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

Runaway - Kanye West
