The unforgettable and uplifting award-winning musical Hamilton arrives on Disney+ today. RTÉ's Stephen Byrne caught up with creator Lin-Maneul Miranda and the original cast on Zoom.

The filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton combines the best elements of live theatre, film and streaming to bring the cultural phenomenon to homes around the world.

The musical is a modern hip hop retelling of Alexander Hamilton's journey to becoming a founding father of the US. Its themes of revolution feel extra important and relevant in the year that we are living.

Speaking about the musical's original run on Broadway, Lin-Manuel told Stephen Byrne that he realised the show's far-reaching appeal when the phone-lines jammed on the day tickets were released.

He said: "Even in the early days we knew we had the thing that you can't buy, and that is everyone who left the show told everyone they knew about the show and that's unreal.

"The day the tickets went on sale the phone banks crashed. That was surreal".

Lin-Maneul also explained that for the first preview on Broadway they held a lottery giveaway for the front row for which eight hundred people showed up outside the theatre to enter.

By the start of 2020 the production had made over $600 million worldwide between its New York, London, Chicago and touring performances, and pre the Covid-19 pandemic it continued to be one of the most difficult shows to get tickets to.

By striking a deal with Disney+ eager fans have the chance to enjoy the enthralling story while new audiences can enjoy a theatre experience while stage doors remain shut around the world.

Hamilton is available on Disney+ from July 3.
