Born in Nigeria and raised in the Midlands, African-Irish singer Tolü Makay is gearing up for the release of her debut EP in September. We ask her the BIG questions.

Tell us three things about yourself?
I'm an artist who sings and writes songs. I love helping people feel better about themselves and be their best self, hence why I studied psychology and philosophy in university. And I know how to make a bridge using a shoelace.

How would you describe your music?
My music is my diary in the perspective of a viewer reading it to understand me a little better, but they end up relating to my experiences.

Who are your musical inspirations?
I have a long list and for various reasons. I think the seeds from these artists are what I attribute to what inspires me, adding an element of understanding to the type of artist I am building to be.

Nina Simone - A person who wasn't afraid to talk of the times she was in without sugarcoating the emotions she felt.

Beyoncé - A person who has a stage presence like no other and goes beyond pushing boundaries.

Erykah Badu - A person with her unique style and voice introducing quirkiness and swagger.

Labrinth - A person who has collaborated with everyone and has a true musical creative exploration and poetic essence.

Amy Winehouse - A person who went through challenging experiences and took account of it through songs.

Frank Ocean - A person who creates, understands his industry and lives his life.

How have you been occupying yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
I have been doing a lot of collaborations - Zaska, Irish Women in Harmony, X Collective, Zapho - as well as working on my upcoming project, and debut single releases. I've been getting fit again, which has boosted my confidence exponentially.

What's your favourite song right now?
I'm so bad with picking my favorite anything, but I've been stuck on Teyana Taylor's new album called The Album. She has Erykah Badu, Kehlani, Davido, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott on it. I'm her album! It's absolutely insane - I love it!

Favourite lyric of all time?
I really don't have one, but here's a lyric of mine from an unreleased single called Don't Let Go:
"Don't let go, don't give up, on who you are or who you want to be, because, you've got it all."

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
Haha - I feel like I'm answering an impossible question! I'd go crazy. Perhaps Freedom by Beyoncé.
