A guitar played by late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain on MTV Unplugged has become the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction.

The acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E was played by Cobain during his famous performance on the popular music show five months before he passed away.

According to Julien's Auctions, the retro instrument sold for £4.8 million to Rode Microphones founder Peter Freedman. It is now the most expensive guitar ever to be sold at auction.

The guitar was sold along with its original case, which Cobain had decorated with a poster from the 1990 album Feel the Darkness by Poison Idea.

Freedman is reportedly going to take the guitar on a global tour to raise money for the performing arts.
