What's on? 10 top telly tips for Tuesday June 16

Spides
Spides

There's a new sci-fi show called Spides, the return of Grow, Cook, Eat as well as 24 Hours in A&E, while it’s the end of the line for The Salisbury Poisonings and Mafia Only Kills in Summer...

Pick of the Day

Spides, 9.00pm, Syfy & NOW TV

Were you a fan of The X-Files? If so, you should fancy this new co-production between Syfy Germany and Syfy America, which promises to be 'a mind-bending mystery set to get your skin crawling' - which is pretty much what passes for reality these days.

The story centres on Nora (Game of Thrones' Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), a young woman from Berlin, who wakes up from a coma after taking a new party drug called Blis and can no longer remember anything.

When investigators Nique Navar and David Leonhart find out that numerous teenagers have disappeared as part of the spread of the new drug, Nora begins to investigate.

She discovers that aliens (probably the same ones behind the 5G nightmare) are using the drug to take over the bodies of their victims, and then comes to realise that she herself is the key to the alien invasion she is trying to fight.

Don't Miss

9-1-1, 9.00pm, Sky Witness

Ryan Murphy’s diverting soufflé of a series about first responders in Los Angeles is enjoying a brisk, thrill-a-minute third season. It helps that the strong cast includes Angela Bassett and Peter Krause.

This week, Bassett's character Athena takes action after her family experiences a traumatic traffic stop, Buck’s suit against the city goes to arbitration, and Eddie turns to Lena in his struggles with his anger issues.

Turn on, tune in, and switch off.

World’s Most Evil Killers, 9.00pm, Sky Crime & NOW TV

This week the psychologists and criminologists of World’s Most Evil Killers turn their eyes to the chilling case of Todd Christopher Kohlhepp.

After a childhood that showcased several worrying signs of psychopathy, Kohlhepp was imprisoned for the rape and kidnap of a 14-year-old girl in Arizona.

Released in 2001, he appeared to have turned over a new leaf and lived several years as a successful real estate agent. The reality was somewhat different.

New or Returning Shows

Your Home Made Perfect, 8.00pm, BBC Two

Back after a five-week break, Angela Scanlon (above) presents as Laura Jane Clark and Robert Jamison create virtual reality renovations for a home in Surrey, which has a poorly-positioned front door and a cluttered hallway.

Laura takes a characteristically pragmatic approach with a simple but striking contemporary design, while experimental architect Robert decides a far more radical approach is the answer.

24 Hours in A&E, 9.00pm, Channel 4

The gripping hospital documentary series returns, focusing on the stories of two motorcyclists, which reveal how the bonds between loved ones can be strengthened through adversity.

Prezmek may have life-changing spinal injuries following a high-speed motorcycle crash on the M4, forcing his wife Tatia to reflect on how their plans for the future may have to change.

Teenager Leon undergoes a CT scan after crashing into a central reservation. While waiting for the results, his mother Janey thinks back to his school days.

Grow, Cook, Eat, 8.00pm, RTÉ One

Michael Kelly and Karen O'Donohoe (below) return with their home-grown focus on a household staple - the onion.

Easy to grow and very low maintenance, both red and white varieties are sown in the raised bed, with Karen holding back some of the sets for container growing.

Plus, chef Katie Sanderson creates berber eggs - a simple but tasty meal that incorporates onions and eggs, and is a perfect brunch dish.

Budgie, 9.00pm, Talking Television TV

Bit of an oddity, this show from the early 1970s. But worth a look - if you can stomach the gay and Irish stereotypes typical of the day.

Adam Faith (below, on the cover of the RTÉ Guide in 1963) was a massive British pop star in the 1960s, but in the the following decade he focused more on acting, until a motor accident stifled his career move.

This crime drama was the highpoint, starring Faith as a hapless small-time crook on the lookout for scams and get rich quick schemes.

Fresh out of prison, in this opening episode Budgie is hired as a stripper's bodyguard and tries to steal a van full of illegal pornography.

Ending Today

The Salisbury Poisonings, 9.0pm, BBC One

It’s the third and final episode of the Beeb’s impressive, three-part, fact-based drama, starring Anne-Marie Duff, Rafe Spall and Annabel Scholey, about the 2018 Novichok poisoning crisis in Salisbury, England.

Several months after the bizarre events, Salisbury city is starting to forget and heal - until a scavenged perfume bottle leads to tragic consequences for Dawn and Charlie.

Mafia Only Kills in Summer, 11.20pm, RTÉ One

Season two of this Sicilian comedy-drama concludes as Rosario proposes to Angela, and Lorenzo asks Judge Costa to celebrate the wedding.

Meanwhile, Massimo must choose whether to go to Brazil with Buscetta. In Italian.

Chasing the Moon, 10.00pm, BBC Four

The Moon Landing documentary series concludes by looking back at the moment Neil Armstrong climbed down from his lunar module and became the first man to walk on the moon.

He was followed 15 minutes later by his Apollo 11 crewmate Buzz Aldrin - a historic moment watched live by millions of viewers around the world and a nervous team back in the Nasa control centre.
