Michael Corcoran: mastering the psychology of mind over muscle
Michael Corcoran: mastering the psychology of mind over muscle

"’The man who made time, made plenty of it’ an old Irish saying, perhaps, but so true in the world we live in these days," says RTÉ Sport's rugby specialist Michael Corcoran.

"Normally at this time of the year I would be pretty frantic as the rugby season would have almost reached its hectic conclusion.

"Months ago, when the fixtures and dates were confirmed for games, I wrote them all into my diary to help with planning ahead, I like to look ahead from time to time to see where I might end up.

"Right now, I'm frantically crossing things out and thinking of what might have been, and where I may have ended up, and who played in the recent Champions Cup final in Marseille.

"So much time to fill, and how to use that time productively.

"For years I’ve been putting so many things off, in my head I’ve been far too busy for almost everything, I’ve lost touch with so many people over time.

"Reconnecting with old friends all over the World has been a priority, and it’s been so uplifting.

"A recent WhatsApp call to a pal in New Zealand had me in great form for 48 hours after it.

"I’ve started reading again, I have a Kindle but there is something fantastic about buying a book, leafing through the pages, taking your time.

"I must confess I am in awe of Christy Dignam. His music is outstanding, now I have read his story My Crazy World. I want to meet him some day.

"The Tattooist of Auschwitz based on the true story of Lale Solokov is another book you simply have to read.

"American coach Matt Fitzgerald's How Bad Do You Want It?, mastering the psychology of mind over muscle, got me thinking about me as a person and what direction I needed to be heading. (This book published in 2015, and available in paperback, examines more than 12 races, done by notable runners, to discover the ways elite athletes strengthen their mental toughness).

"A healthier me is the priority, a tough fitness programme started in early March is paying dividends thankfully, a lot done, but lots more to do. Sounds like some kinda slogan.

"Lots of walking, lots of listening to music and podcasts, non-sporty ones top of the list.

"I recently discovered Grounded with Louis Theroux, a podcast series where Louis has in-depth conversations with various people, Jon Ronson, Boy George, Helena Bonham Carter and Lenny Henry to name a few, check it out, it's worth it.

The clock ticks - "When the time is right, the place will be right"

"I was following the adventures of former rugby player Damien Browne, now an adventurer, and look forward to resuming when the time is right.

"As for The Last Dance I’m a late convert, only a few episodes in, more to go.

"Nearest my fingertips right now? The New York Times 36 Hours Europe-3rd Edition, 130 destinations, each as appealing as the other. When the time is right, the place will be right."
