Even during a pandemic there can be success stories - as Netflix have proved with their announcement of an increased customer base.

The media-services provider and production company has revealed that they've more than doubled its own projections for new customers - and admit it's all down to Covid-19.

As stay-at-home audiences mushroomed in recent weeks, many of them binged on series such as recent hit Tiger King, the doc-series about Joe Exotic and other big cat zookeepers in the US, and long-running shows such as Better Call Saul.

The world's largest streaming service gained 15.8 million paying customers in the quarterly period from January to March, bringing its global total to 182.9 million. Netflix had predicted it would add seven million during the period.

But the company is also predicting a weaker second half of the year if instructions to remain at home are lifted.

"The thing we are certain of is the internet is growing . . . and people want entertainment, they want to be able to escape and connect, whether times are difficult or joyous," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

Most programming for 2020, and much of 2021, already has been filmed and is being finished remotely in post-production, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added in a post-earnings interview with an analyst.

"We don't anticipate moving the schedule around much, certainly not in 2020," Sarandos said.
