Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have returned to the USA after battling Covid-19 in Australia.

The 63-year-old actor and his wife, also 63, have now both returned to their Los Angeles home after recovering from the virus, according to PageSix.

The Forrest Gump actor and Wilson were photographed smiling while driving a vehicle in the city.

Celebrity website TMZ said the photographs were taken shortly after the pair landed at a small Los Angeles area airport

The Hollywood couple, who were the first celebrities to go public with their diagnosis on March 11, kept fans updated throughout their quarantine.

Posting on Twitter on Monday, Hanks said: "Hey, folks. Two weeks after our first symptoms and we feel better. Sheltering in place works like this: You don't give it to anyone - you don’t get it from anyone. Common sense, no?

"Going to take a while, but it we can take care of each other, help where we can, and give up some comforts . . . This, too, shall pass. We can figure this out. Hanx."

Taking a more creative approach, Wilson posted a video of herself reading sci-fi novel Ender's Game while rapping out Hip Hop Hooray by nineties hip hoppers Naughty by Nature.
