Story Of My Life our song for Irish Eurovision glory

Dubliner Lesley Roy will be representing Ireland at the Eurovision in Rotterdam this year with her song Story of My Life

Roy, who lives between Dublin and New York, said that representing Ireland at the contest thus May with a song she worked extremely hard on has meant that one of her lifetime ambitions has been fulfilled.

"I had written this song -Story of My Life - that I was obsessed with and could never figure out what I wanted to do with it," she revealed.

"So it was a combination of wanting to share this song that's also timed with where we are in society right now."

Discussing the video for the track, Roy said: "we can and we will defy them, rise up and throw a massive dance party to celebrate. The music director Kate Dolan also cast individuals that truly did have their own story. Kate stayed true to the song and I think it will really shine through in the video."

The Balbriggan singer-songwriter grew up hearing the sounds of early Motown and Burt Bacharach in her family home "but also straight down the middle pop stuff, Fleetwood Mac."

The singer - whose album, Unbeautiful was released in 2008 - started playing guitar at ten. "I really started listening to whatever I could get my hands on, anything from the Dixie Chicks to Britney Spears. I try to ingest as much music as I can."

Robyn, Kacey Musgrave and Christine and the Queens are all inspirational acts for the musician.

The first Eurovision Semi-Final will take place in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Tuesday May 12, and the second Semi-Final will take place on Thursday May 14. The final is scheduled for Saturday May 16.
