Lena Waithe is set to voice the first openly gay character in an animated Disney film.

The Master of None star will voice the role of Officer Specter - a lesbian Cyclops police officer - in the upcoming Pixar film Onward.

It will mark the first time Disney and Pixar have featured a self-identified LGBTQ character in a film.

Producer Kori Rae confirmed the role in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, saying the inclusion of the character "just kind of happened" when the movie was being written.

"The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted," she said.

Director Dan Scanlon added: "It's a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world."

Waithe will star alongside Tom Holland and Chris Pratt in the upcoming animated fantasy adventure.

Holland and Pratt voice elves who are attempting to resurrect their late father for 24 hours.

Waithe's cyclops character makes a brief appearance in the film, after pulling over the two main characters. She mentions her girlfriend before letting them move on.
