Coronation Street star Craige Els, who plays Derek Milligan, has said fans of the ITV soap are in for a "tragic twist" in the Christmas Day special.

Viewers will see an armed Derek in a stand-off with nemesis Gary Windass (Mikey North).

"Gary has created a very dangerous beast, when someone has nothing to lose they will do extreme things and he wants revenge," Els told the Press Association.
"He just wants to scare Gary," Els continued.
"He wants to see Gary as scared as Gary has made him feel and for once have the upper hand.
"What he doesn't anticipate is how far it could go and that's the tragic twist."
Coronation Street airs on Virgin Media One and ITV.
