Tom Cruise returns to the cockpit in Top Gun: Maverick trailer

Thirty-four years after the release of the 1980s action classic Top Gun, Tom Cruise's Maverick is set to make a dramatic return to the skies in Top Gun: Maverick.

The sequel to the 1986 action movie is slated for release in 2020, and will see Cruise return as the daring pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who is training Top Gun graduates for a new, highly specialised mission.

The new trailer sees Cruise alongside newcomer Miles Teller, who plays Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, the son of Mitchell's late friend and radar intercept officer Nick "Goose" Bradshaw.

"Your instructor is one the finest pilots this programme has ever produced," the recruits are told in one scene.

"His exploits are legendary. What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death."

Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the sequel, which also stars Jennifer Connolly, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell.

Ahead of the trailer's release, 57-year-old Hollywood star Cruise teased the arrival of the much awaited sequel by sharing the film's poster on social media.

Top Gun: Maverick is due in cinemas June 2020.
