The Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera has reported that Vatican prosecutors are investigating allegations that the Holy See reportedly invested more than $1 million in the Elton John biopic Rocketman, through Peter's Pence.
The newspaper is also investigating reports that $3.6 million (€3.2m plus) was invested in Men in Black: International by the Holy See's Secretariat of State.
Rocketman was censored in Russia, Malaysia, Samoa and the Cook Islands, while Delta Airlines imposed a temporary ban.
According to the National Catholic Register, Peter’s Pence refers to financial support offered by the faithful to the Pope, which according to the Vatican are "destined to Church needs, to humanitarian initiatives and social promotion projects, as well as to the support of the Holy See."
The Corriere della Sera newspaper reports that the movie investments are just a small amount of the Vatican’s funds, managed by an investment company in Malta named the Centurion Global Fund.
