Hollywood's desire to squeeze every cent out of sequels and reboots knows no bounds – and it looks like Planet of the Apes could be next.

Maze Runner's Wes Ball is expected to be in the director's chair of the next chapter as Disney CEO Bob Iger is apparently eager to further expand the franchise.

The most recent trilogy of films in the series - Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes – was completed as recently as 2017, but following the recent Fox-Disney merger, it's set to be the first Fox property up for development in the new set-up.

Whether it's going to be a complete reboot, a fourth installment, or even feature any of the recent cast, are all matters for conjecture at the moment.

Since the original, Charlton Heston-starring Planet of the Apes film was released in 1968, there has been a total of nine films in the franchise, as well as a 1974 TV drama series and a 1975 animated series.
