Tamzin Outhwaite has said she's "emotional" after her character Mel Owen was killed in Thursday night's EastEnders

Mel died after she was run down by a lorry, just minutes after surviving a near-fatal car crash.

After the dramatic episode aired, Outhwaite wrote on Twitter: "Thank you all ... tonight thankfully I'm busy as I'm too emotional to address any @bbceastenders messages tonight... but [prayer emoji]"

She later thanks viewers "for all the love".

The soap star tweeted: "I could not have relished playing Mel any more and I could not feel more proud.

"Here's to the next 21 years of life, the next job, the next chapter.

"Happy Friday people."

The actress reprised her role as Mel in 2018 after 16 years away from the soap.

EastEnders viewers have heaped praise on Outhwaite following her exit.

EastEnders airs on RTÉ One and BBC One on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
