Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance, the musical incarnation of writer and spoken-word performer Peter Murphy, have released a new single, The Bells of Hell.

Speaking about the release, Murphy, author of the novels John the Revelator and Shall We Gather at the River, said, "I was shooting for somewhere between Iggy, the Pogues and William Blake. You might as well aim high."

A full-on musical assault combining punk poetics, cinematic guitar soundscapes and pounding big beats, the title of the track comes from a World War 1 aviators' song, a version of which Murphy first encountered in Brendan Behan’s play The Hostage.

Murphy, who previously released two acclaimed albums with the Revelator Orchestra, has been translated and published in Germany, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany, Serbia and Romania as well as the UK, US, Canada and Australia, and as a solo act has been invited to perform in New York, London, Rome, Berlin, Boston and Tranås,  Sweden.

The Resistance, who have been described as "a mutant ninja spoken-word rock 'n’ roll band", are guitarist Dan Comerford (Frankenstein Bolts) plus a four-piece drum squad made up of the Gangnus sisters Rebecca, Tamara and Jasmin, and Kevin Dillon.

They are currently completing their first album, due for release in 2020, and play the Sky & the Ground, Wexford, Thursday December 12.
