Coronation Street actress Katie McGlynn has been praised by viewers for her moving performance after her character Sinead Tinker's final scenes aired on the soap on Friday night.

Viewers were left distraught when Sinead lost her battle with cervical cancer in Friday's episode and took to Twitter to pay tribute to the actress and soap for their sensitive handling of the illness.

In response to the huge reaction to the hour-long episode, McGlynn thanked fans for their support.

She wrote: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your amazing support and love.

"Thank you to every single person who makes Coronation Street the brilliant show that it is and most importantly, THANK YOU to every single viewer for following Sinead's journey."

The 26-year-old actress, who has played Sinead for the past seven years, later posted a heartfelt message to those who have been affected by cancer.

"To every single person that is, or has been affected by cancer, stay strong!", she tweeted.

"Seek comfort in family, friends and loved ones. Don't be afraid to ask for help and don't be afraid to feel however it is you feel! My heart is with you all, be brave and fight."

The soap star added that she's "so overwhelmed" by people's comments and messages.
