Stephen Moore, known as the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android in Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and for his role as Eldane in Doctor Who, has died aged 81.

Hitchhiker's producer and director Dirk Maggs confirmed the English actor's death on Twitter.

He wrote: "Our dear friend Stephen Moore has died. A fine actor, a lovely man and the original and most iconic voice of Marvin The Paranoid Android in The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

"Our thoughts are with his family and our memories of him will always make us smile."

Moore first voiced the character of Marvin in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's radio series in 1978, before voicing the role on the television show in the 1980s.

The prolific actor was also well known for playing George Mole, father of Adrian Mole in the ITV series, Kevin's dad in Harry Enfield's comedy sketch show and Eldane, the leader of the Silurian's in the fifth season of Doctor Who.

Moore also had a successful career on stage, earning the 1983 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for best actor in a revival of The Doll's House.

He also starred in As You Like It, The Merry Wives of Windsor, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night.

The actor is survived by his five children.
