American rapper Lil Nas X, famed for his viral debut hit single Old Town Road, has revealed that he prayed that being gay was just "a phase" when he was younger.

The 20-year-old artist spoke to Gayle King on CBS's This Morning about coming out publicly earlier this year and coming to terms with his sexuality.

In a teaser clip for the interview released on Twitter, the rapper says he knew he was gay from a young age, but hoped it would "go away".

He said: "I knew. I would just pray and pray that it was a phase."

He said he came to terms with his sexuality when he was aged 16 or 17, but thought that he would not tell anybody "ever".

The Georgia native, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, said the decision to come out was made easier because of his fame.

"Me being in this position, it's easy for me", he said.

"But some little boy 10 miles from here, it's not going to be good for him."

He acknowledged that his coming out publicly could help those in a similar situation, but said there is still a long way to go in terms of acceptance.

"We still have a long way to go, because it's not like everybody is messing with me now. 'Of course somebody who's listening to me in school right now, it's like, 'You're gay, cause you're listening to him.' There's still lot to be done", he said.

The hit maker officially came out as gay in his song c7osure which was released in June, the global Pride month.

He tweeted: "Some of y'all already know, some of y'all don't care...but before this month ends I want y'all to listen closely to c7osure."
