EastEnders boss Kate Oates has promised fans a "huge" Christmas on the BBC soap, dominated by a "messy love affair".

Warning: spoiler alert!

Oates shared her plans for Albert Square with Metro.co.uk, telling the website there will be "so much going on in Walford from autumn, well into the New Year".

"But, of course, in true EastEnders tradition, Christmas is huge," Oates continued.

"Much of it will circulate around a very complicated and messy love affair - so expect some major Sheanu [Sharon and Keanu] drama as it all explodes - but we've got some twists and surprises in that story which last right through to New Year."

Keanu is in the thick of things in the months ahead

Looking ahead to the show's 35th anniversary in February, Oates said: "I can't say much at all about it now - except we have a big Carter story at the forefront, and some great drama with Whitney too - so it is going to be a very exciting time for the show.

"Between our huge September kick-off with the wedding week, right through to the anniversary beyond, there is no let up."

EastEnders airs on RTÉ One and BBC One on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
