Coronation Street star James Burrows, who plays Ali Neeson on the soap, has said his character's feelings for Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) are genuine.
Last year, Michelle played by Kym Marsh, was left shocked when her biological child, who was originally played by Dario Coates, turned up.
In recent episodes Michelle has made it clear that she disapproves of her son dating Maria. She reckons that Maria is only interested in Ali's (James Burrows) money but later admits that she is being an overprotective mother.
Speaking about their blossoming relationship, the recently engaged star said his character "absolutely" has feelings for Maria.
"Yes absolutely they have real feelings for each other and he is happy to take on Liam. Ali is a good man deep down and a loving and caring person and you can see this with the relationship."
When asked about his battle with drugs, James admits Ali finds it difficult to open up to people.
"He has been struggling and fighting these demons in his head for a while now ever since the Ronan thing happened and he finds it difficult to talk to anyone so he starts to self medicate. He is very independent and private, he internalises a lot.
"He doesn't have a lot of people he can trust. The flashbacks are making him anxious and he needs to relax to try and get through every day so he starts taking different tablets to try and cope with his demons and to be able to do his job. Before you know it, he realises that he has become addicted."
Asked if he likes playing a troubled character, Burrows said he enjoys taking on "gritty" roles.
"I do enjoy that, I always enjoy playing those roles. It was great when I first came into Corrie and got to play the nice doctor but it is great to get these gritty more hard hitting scenes."
Coronation Street airs on Virgin Media One and ITV on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
