The first trailer for the star-studded drama Bombshell has been released.

The teaser gives viewers their first look at Oscar-winner Charlize Theron as former Fox news anchor Megyn Kelly and Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson.

Margot Robbie is also seen in her role as a fictional news producer named Kayla Pospisil.

The film tells the story of how Fox News boss Roger Ailes was forced to resign from the company after being accused of sexual misconduct by a number of women.

John Lithgow is playing Ailes in the Oscar-tipped drama from director Jay Roach and writer Charles Randolph.

Lithgow has stressed that the film is about the women who stood up to Ailes, rather than the man himself.

He said at the Sundance film festival earlier this year: "There's so much talk about the very good signs that there's so many great women’s stories being told.

"This might be one of the best because it really is about six or seven extremely different women who have extremely different experiences and response of the crisis at Fox. I play the crisis."

The impressive cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, Connie Britton, Rob Delaney and Malcolm McDowell as Rupert Murdoch.

Bombshell is set to be released on December 20.
