Former Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy is in a stable condition in a New York hospital after suffering a heart attack.

The 62-year-old was taken ill before a concert in the city on Tuesday. He is receiving treatment at Lennox Hill Hospital.

In a statement posted on the British-born singer's Instagram account, cardiologist Jason Song said: "He had two stents placed in his right coronary artery and was started on medications to manage his heart condition."

Murphy's family added: "We would like to thank the fans for their undying support and hope that Peter will be back on stage with a refreshed heart, stronger than before."

Murphy formed seminal goth rock act Bauhaus in 1978 alongside guitarist Daniel Ash, drummer Kevin Haskins and bass player David J, releasing four albums before splitting in 1983. They reunited in 2005 and released another album in 2008 before splitting again.
