Country legend Willie Nelson has told his fans he has cancelled his US tour due to a "breathing problem".

The 86-year-old shared the news on Twitter that his tour - scheduled to run until November 29 - had been cancelled.

"To my fans, I'm sorry to cancel my tour, but I have a breathing problem that I need to have my doctor check out. I'll be back Love, Willie," he wrote.

Nelson has battled pneumonia and emphysema over the years, undergoing stem-cell therapy to help his lungs.

He released his 69th studio album, Ride Me Back Home, in June.
