Ashton Kutcher has testified as a witness during a murder trial of a woman he dated.

On Wednesday, May 29, the 41-year-old actor testified at the trial of Michael Gargiulo, dubbed the Hollywood Ripper, who is charged with the murder of Ashley Ellerin and another woman.

Kutcher told the court in Los Angeles that he went to pick up 22-year-old fashion design student Ellerin to go out for drinks on a night in 2001, having spoken to her on the phone earlier that evening to arrange the date.

He said he found the lights on and the door locked when he arrived at her home two hours later, and said he looked through the window and saw "what I thought was a red wine spilled on the carpet."

"I didn't really think anything of it," Kutcher said, and left when she did not answer the door.

The next day he learned she had been killed.

The actor said he told detectives the next day that he knew his fingerprints were on the door and that he was "freaking out".

Gargiulo is facing trial in Los Angeles on two charges of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

He was arrested in 2008 and has pleaded not guilty.
