What's on? TV highlights for Tuesday

The Planets
The Planets

The Beeb has a new landmark series called The Planets, Blue Bloods is back, there's a look back at the Garth Brooks debacle, while 9-1-1 and Arrow are among the shows bowing out tonight . . .

Pick of the Day

The Planets, 9.00pm, BBC Two

In this major new landmark series, Professor Brian Cox tells the extraordinary life story of our solar system.

The first episode traces the development of the four rocky worlds closest to the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Born together, they battled the unbelievable violence of the early solar system to become stable planets.

For a while each had a moment of hope when they enjoyed almost Earth-like conditions, but Mercury is now scorched and barren, Venus is a runaway greenhouse with a scorching atmosphere and Mars is a frozen desert. Only on Earth do oceans - and life - survive.

Why has Earth thrived whilst the others have faded away?

New or Returning Shows

Blue Bloods, 9.30pm, RTÉ 2

Season nine of the popular cop show starring Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg comes in double episodes, beginning with Danny taking a case involving a drug cartel member he believes set his house on fire.

Meanwhile, Erin is given a promotion but finds herself in a challenging situation when both Danny and Jamie ask her for help with their investigation.

Gormley tries to locate a former NYPD detective he believes may be a threat to Frank's safety; Erin navigates office politics when she chooses to reopen a closed case; and Jamie is transferred to a new precinct with a lot of problems.

Here's Donnie Wahlberg on season 9:

Ending Tonight

9-1-1, 9.00pm, Sky Witness & NOW TV

The Angela Bassett and Peter Krause-starring emergency services drama ends its second season with possibly its most exciting story yet as the crews suspect a serial bomber in on the loose.

Also, the 118 responds to calls from a stunt driver caught in a hairy situation. Meanwhile, Eddie’s family comes to town and Buck faces a life or death situation.

Arrow, 8.00pm, Sky One

It’s the final episode of this seventh season, and with the sad news that season 8 will be its last, what implications will be in place for the hooded hero’s swan song?

In this concluding episode, the battle between Oliver and Emiko comes to a boiling point which brings back some familiar faces and leaves others in dire jeopardy.

SEAL Team, 9.00pm, Sky One & NOW TV

On a night on of endings on Sky, here's this show's second season finale, and Bravo team’s future is on the line when Commander Shaw recommends they be split up, but Jason’s unit has one final mission to prove him wrong.

Don't Miss

The Good Fight, 10.15pm, RTÉ One

This third season is getting a bit too like Ally McBeal for my liking – those animated shorts are really annoying.

Anyhow, this week Blum weasels his way to a co-counsel seat on the firm's largest case against genetics testing company Second Helix, while Lucca and Jay come face to face with an alt-right group.

Meanwhile, Maia attempts to move on amid a pay dispute.

Scannal, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

In 2014 Garth Brooks was announced to play at Dublin's Croke Park. He hadn't performed in Ireland since 1997 and the initial announcement of two concerts precipitated an almost insatiable demand for tickets.

Two concerts gave way to three and then to four and finally to five concerts, all to be staged 'subject to licence' in a stadium that only had planning permission for three special events a year.

And all of 2014's had been accounted for, so something had to give.
