Actress and presenter Jameela Jamil has said that Elle Fanning fainting because her dress was "too tight" is symptomatic of "a huge problem in fashion".

Fanning reportedly fainted during a dinner at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening.

After the incident, the 21-year-old Hollywood star took to Instagram to assure her followers she was fine, writing: "Oops, had a fainting spell tonight in my 1950's Prada prom dress but it's all good!"

She included the hashtags "dress too tight" and "time of the month".

Jamil has now taken to Twitter to say this exemplifies a deeper issue in the fashion industry.

She wrote: "Jesus Christ, reading about Elle Fanning, a *very* thin actress fainting because her sample size Prada dress was too tight, and then blaming it on her period, rather than the fact that sample sizes are f***ing insane these days... is symptomatic of a huge problem in fashion.

She continued: "Incredibly slender Elle shouldn't be blaming herself for being a few pounds heavier on her period. She should be horrified at the size of the dress."

Jameela Jamil hits out at fashion industry for "making a grown woman faint"

Jamil concluded: "TO BE CLEAR this is NOT me hitting out at Elle Fanning, but at the fashion industry for making a grown woman faint in their clothing."

According to Variety, Fanning, the youngest ever member of the Cannes jury which decides what film is awarded the Palme d'Or, fainted during the Chopard Trophee dinner.

The magazine reported that Fanning was seated next to her older sister, the actress Dakota Fanning, who helped her to her feet before security whisked them away.
