The revered screen-writer, who was born Alvin Supowitz in Philadelphia, began his Hollywood career with a brief uncredited role in the movie, From Here to Eternity.

Sargent began his working life in earnest as a writer for television, but following his screenplay for the 1966 Michael Caine movie Gambit, he enjoyed steady film work.

He scripted an adaptation of Paul Zindel’s play,The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds for director Paul Newman and its star, Newman's wife Joanne Woodward.

In 1973 he wrote Alan J Pakula's Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing, the story of an eccentric couple played by Maggie Smith and Timothy Bottoms. He wrote two episodes for Paper Moon when it was adapted into a 1974 ABC TV series.

Sargent is reported to have done `uncredited work', according to Variety, on the 1976 remake of A Star Is Born starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
