Director John Singleton 'under great medical care' after stroke

The family of Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton has said he is receiving "great medical care" after the Oscar-nominated filmmaker suffered a stroke last Wednesday.

Celebrity website TMZ, which first reported the story, said the 51-year-old sought treatment at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles after feeling weakness in one of his legs after a flight from Costa Rica to the US. 

In a statement on Saturday, Singleton's family said: "On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. 

"We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."

Singleton made his feature directorial debut with coming-of-age story Boyz n the Hood in 1991, receiving Oscar nominations for Best Director and Original Screenplay.

His other credits include the films Shaft, 2Fast 2Furious and Four Brothers and the television series The People v OJ Simpson - American Crime Story, Empire and Billions.

He is the co-creator and executive producer of the cocaine crime-drama Snowfall which was renewed last year for a third season. 

In a statement, cable Network FX, which screens Snowfall in the US, said: "We are sad to learn the news of John's condition, but we know he's a fighter. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at FX and his Snowfall family are with him and we are hopeful for a complete and speedy recovery."
