Alex Rodriguez has made the amusing admission that he practised proposing to Jennifer Lopez three times with his assistant.

The former professional baseball player got down on one knee to Lopez while on a tropical beach holiday in March.

The sports star has now revealed that a lot of planning and a few rehearsals went into making the big moment perfect.

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he said: "I planned it for about six months and it was on a beach in the Bahamas.

"I had the ring, but what was interesting is the three days prior to me going down on one knee and getting engaged was I rehearsed three days in a row."

"I wanted the sunset to be perfect," Rodriguez continued before Fallon asked him if he rehearsed by himself.

"Well, I had my assistant actually with me," Rodriguez admitted with a laugh.

The 43-year-old said that he kept an eagle eye on the time of the sunset in order to time the proposal.

"One time the sunset was at 6:27 [pm], the next day 6:29 [pm] and then the third day it was raining," he continued.

"So, I kind of came out at around 6:29 [pm] and it worked out well."

The couple announced their engagement on their Instagram accounts by posting the same picture of the singing superstar wearing a giant diamond ring.

Rodriguez captioned the image of J-Lo wearing the ring as he holds her hand: "She said yes", while Lopez shared the romantic image with a string of heart emojis.

They have been dating since early 2017 and made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala in May that year.

Earlier this year, Lopez opened up about her love life. She said she had to learn to love herself before being happy in a relationship, while admitting her relationship journey has been "very up and down".

She was married to singer Marc Antony, her third husband, for 10 years. They have two children together, twins Max and Emme.

Lopez was previously married to choreographer Cris Judd and waiter and actor Ojani Noa. She was once engaged to Hollywood star Ben Affleck.

Rodriguez was previously married to Cynthia Scurtis from 2002 to 2008. They have two daughters together.
