Actor Seymour Cassel dies aged 84

Seymour Cassel, the veteran character actor best known for his role in a number of Wes Anderson films, and his Oscar-nominated performance in John Cassavetes' Faces, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 84.

It is reported that Cassel died on Sunday as a result of Alzheimer's complications.

In a career spanning almost 60 years, Cassel appeared in over 200 films and television series and was regarded as one of the greats of American independent cinema.

He was a Best Supporting Actor nominee in 1969 for his role in John Cassavetes' Faces and also worked with the director on a number of other films including Shadows, Too Late Blues, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Love Streams.

Cassel received a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival for his performance opposite Steve Buscemi in the 1992 film In the Soup. He went on to star in Buscemi's acclaimed directorial debut Trees Lounge, his prison drama The Animal Factory and comedy-drama Lonesome Jim.

Cassel's other film credits included Stuck on You, Indecent Proposal, Honeymoon in Vegas, Dick Tracy, Colors, Tin Men, The Last Tycoon, Coogan's Bluff and The Killers (1964).

His series credits included Flight of the Conchords, ER, Heist, Tracey Takes On, Under Suspicion and The Fugitive.
