Former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati has said she is "recovering at home" after reportedly being injured by falling scenery during a performance of an all-female version of Shakespeare's Richard II in London last Thursday.

The 52-year-old, best known for her role as Sunita in Coronation Street, took to Twitter on Monday to give people an update on her condition following the incident at Shakespeare's Globe.

"Thank you so much for all your messages," Gulati wrote. "I'm recovering at home and being wonderfully cared for by my son, my #RichardII family and the team @The_Globe. I'll let you know when I'm back on stage, but hopefully it'll be this week!"

The Evening Standard earlier reported that Gulati was onstage in her role as the Duke of York at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare's Globe when the incident occurred last Thursday.

An eyewitness told the paper that Gulati's co-star, co-director of the play Adjoa Andoh, "took control" of the situation.

"I just heard this loud bang and there was the actor lying on the stage motionless," said the audience member. "It was about five or ten minutes after the interval and suddenly there was this tremendous bang.

"There was a lot going on on the stage. It was only when we heard this bang that we realised she seemed to have been knocked out. Nobody moved. Then [Andoh] playing Richard II came out, she took control.

"It was pretty shocking. She certainly didn't seem conscious when we left the theatre." Performances on Friday night and Sunday afternoon were cancelled but resumed on Sunday evening.

Another audience member said: "A piece of the set fell out of the ceiling. It hit her smack on top of the head. We thought it was fake at first."

It's reported that someone onstage then asked the audience if there was a doctor in the house before an ambulance arrived.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the theatre said: "Shobna Gulati was injured during a performance of Richard II on 28 March, but is recovering well at home. An investigation is under way. Shobna hopes to return to the role this week."

The production of Richard II runs until April 21.
