It has been announced in the US that the fantasy series Supernatural is to end after its upcoming 15th season.

The announcement was made by Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins and Jared Padalecki in a video posted to Instagram.

US entertainment trade website Deadline says that Supernatural's run of 327 episodes on the CW network makes it "the longest-running sci-fi/genre series in the history of American broadcast television".

In a message accompanying the video, Supernatural star Jensen Ackles wrote: "Well, it's official. One more round for the Winchester brothers. Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural...does it?"

In a statement, Supernatural's executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb said: "Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us it has been an experience of a lifetime.

"The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We'd like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special.

"It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send off they deserve."
