There are heart-rending scenes in Thursday night's Fair City on RTÉ One as Orla and Wayne receive devastating news - watch a clip here.
When Orla receives the results of her scan she is told that she has fibroids.
"A friend of mine had fibroids and she still got pregnant," offers Orla.
"There are different kinds," the doctor replies. "You have submucosal fibroids, which means they're in the muscles in the wall of the uterus."
The doctor continues that the fibroids "may have been too small to pick up before".
"Fine, I mean, I have fibroids," says Orla. "So what are you saying?"
"This condition... you are much less likely to be able to conceive," is the heartbreaking answer.
