Singer Michael Hutchence: new film on his life and times

The 18th Tribeca Film Festival takes place in New York from April 24 – May 5, featuring 103 films from 124 filmmakers, with 50 per cent of films directed by women in the three competition sections.

Much-anticipated world premieres include films from Abel Ferrara, Werner Herzog, Christoph Waltz, as well as films by Sebastian Schipper, Mary Harron, Peter Strickland, and Andrew Ahn.

While there is a wealth of new movies on show, two films in particular will attract much interest from cinephiles, in the realm of rock music and travel writing. Written and directed by Richard Lowenstein, Mystify: Michael Hutchence is a sensitively-handled documentary about the lead singer of the rock band INXS who sold over 55 million records worldwide. The film charts inauspicious beginnings in the singer's native Australia, all the way up to stardom before the musician's tragic death in 1997. Kylie Minogue and Helena Christensen are contributors to this revealing, affectionate film.

Produced by the BBC, Nomad: In The Footsteps Of Bruce Chatwin is the latest of that run of dark, murkily off-beat documentaries which are German veteran Werner Herzog's specialty. When the writer Bruce Chatwin was dying of AIDS, his friend Werner Herzog made a final visit.

As a farewell gift, Chatwin gave Herzog his rucksack. Thirty years on, Herzog, who has written and he directed the film embarks on his own journey, inspired by the elusive writer's addiction to with the nomadic life.
