Sam Smith: struggled in teenage years with body image

Singer Sam Smith developed "breasts" in his adolescence, was the victim of bullying because of his shape and underwent liposuction surgery at the age of 12.

The 26-year old singer told Jameela Jamil, who has launched the I Weigh Body Positivity movement that he had suffered "his whole life" because of body image.

"When I was a kid, five or six, I was chubby and then it would get worse and worse and worse and I was holding a lot of weight in my chest and then when I hit 11 years old I went to the doctors," the singer said.

"I was holding a lot of oestrogen in my chest," Smith revealed in the I Weigh Interviews series on IGTV.

He said that he felt so self-conscious that it was affecting his mood every day. "I had breasts. I had liposuction, I was 12 years old…. At the time I was very happy about it."

"I think I put the weight back on in two weeks as I hadn’t really figured out my relationship with food," he admitted.

Smith also made the startling declaration that if he could choose a career path again, he would not opt to be famous. The singer said that "no-one treats (you) the same ever" (after fame.)
