Footage of an actual rail disaster is to be excised from Bird Box, Netflix’s post-apocalyptic thriller.
The stock footage used concerns a 2013 incident in Lac-Mégantic, Québec, in which an unattended train bearing crude oil fell down an incline, derailed and exploded, resulting in 47 deaths.
Earlier this year, the streaming giant declared it would not remove the foorage, which in Bird Box employed to show mass casualties following an invasion of ghostly beasts who cause a person’s worst fears to become reality, leading them to kill themselves.
In a statement to TheWrap, Netflix has confirmed that both it and the makers of Bird Box, which stars Sandra Bullock, have vowed to replace the clip. "We’re sorry for any pain caused to the Lac-Mégantic community," the company declared.
Quebec’s minister of culture and communications, Nathalie Roy, welcomed the decision, declaring: "by uniting and pooling our efforts, everything is possible."
In January, she wrote to the CEO of Netflix asking the company to remove the clips. The process to replace the footage will take several weeks, the new statement revealed.
