The death has been announced of the American actor Jan-Michael Vincent, best known for his roles in the TV series Airwolf and opposite Burt Reynolds in the action film Hooper.

The 74-year-old passed away on February 10 according to his death certificate, but news of his death was first reported on Friday.

The cause of death is listed as cardiac arrest. Vincent had been a patient in a hospital in North Carolina at the time of his passing.

Vincent retired from acting in 2009. Off-screen he struggled with addiction problems and had a number of arrests and charges related to domestic violence, drug possession and alcohol abuse. In 2000 he was sentenced to 60 days in jail for violating his probation.

On the screen his other credits included the cult surfing film Big Wednesday, the Charles Bronson thriller The Mechanic and the miniseries The Winds of War

But it is for his role as renegade helicopter pilot Stringfellow Hawke in Airwolf that Vincent will be most remembered.

The series, which followed Hawke's adventures in an advanced battle helicopter, ran for four seasons in the 1980s after a successful television movie.
