Goodfellas star Ray Liotta has joined the cast of The Many Saints of Newark, the big screen prequel to classic mob series The Sopranos.

The Many Saints of Newark, which has been written by The Sopranos creator David Chase and one of the series' writers Lawrence Konner, is set during the race riots in Newark, New Jersey in 1967 and has Game of Thrones and The Sopranos director Alan Taylor behind the lens.

It focuses on the young Tony Soprano, with Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late Sopranos star James Gandolfini, set to portray his father's iconic character in the new film.

Liotta is joining a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Billy Magnussen, Alessandro Nivola and Corey Stoll. The Goodfellas star's involvement in the film was first reported by US entertainment trade website Deadline.

Liotta, who grew up in Newark in the 1960s, said he was "thrilled" to work with writer Chase and director Taylor. 

"David's talent is unmatched and the directing of Alan Taylor makes this even more exciting," he added.

Over 20 cast members from Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas went on to appear in The Sopranos, including Liotta's co-stars Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Frank Vincent and Tony Sirico.
