The ex-wife of celebrity baker Paul Hollywood says ending their marriage was "a big thing to comprehend" but was the right thing to do.

In 2017, The Great British Bake Off judge and his wife, Alex, announced they were separating after nearly 20 years of marriage.

Now, Alex has described splitting up as "awful", but said she ended their marriage out of self-respect.

The couple previously separated in 2013 when the TV baker admitted to having an affair with Marcela Valladolid, who was his co-star on the US version of Bake Off. Their marriage came to an end four years later.

In an interview with the Daily Mail's Weekend magazine, Alex said: "I had to do the right thing, and to have self-respect as well."

She also said it was "so hard to stay married these days" as people did not view marriage in the same way as her parents' generation.

"Everything is so moveable, so transient," she said.

"I just think it's sad, because there's an awful lot more to marriage than just two people hooking up because they like each other. It's about friendship."

Alex says splitting with Paul Hollywood was "awful" but it had to be done

Alex, recently hit out at claims she clashed with her ex-husband's girlfriend Summer Monteys-Fullam during a row while out shopping.

A statement on behalf of Alex Hollywood said: "Alex was shocked to bump into Summer in her local supermarket but even in that difficult situation, she still did not and would not ever verbally abuse anyone.

"Alex has kept a dignified position throughout the last 14 months which have been extremely challenging, and continues to do so."
