Singer Chakha Khan, who releases her first album in 12 years on Friday, has revealed that she fought a prescription drug habit after Prince died of an overdose in 2016.

Prince wrote the funk diva's biggest hit I Feel For You, and Khan's discovery that the Paisley park icon had died from an overdose brought about big changes in her own life.

In 2016, it was revealed that the singer had entered rehab to combat pain medication dependence.

"I've had problems to deal with," she told The Sun. "I had to get my home life and my life straight."

The 65-year-old star attributes her success in battling addiction to her religious faith. "When I was in rehab a few years ago, I got through it with my faith.

"I made up a prayer which I say before I go to bed and first thing when I wake up in the morning. My strong faith has helped me get through it."

Chaka's new album, Hello Happiness - flagged by the single Like Sugar - is her first LP since Funk This, released in 2007 and is officially released on February 15.

"It's important I make new music, " the veteran singer said. "I love it. I'm sick of singing I Feel For You. I just die every time I sing it but I have to. So I'm happy about these new songs. They're cool."

Prince and Khan had planned setting up a label together but the idea did not come to fruition for 10-time Grammy Award winner Khan. "It was going to be him, myself and Miles Davis, and we were also going to do an album together. I have no doubt we will do one in heaven."

The songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur and activist has released 22 albums and notched up 10 US No. 1 singles in the course of her stellar career.

As well as Prince, her list of high profile fans and collaborators, include Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, and Mary J. Blige.
