Former Fleetwood Mac star Lindsey Buckingham is recovering at home after undergoing emergency open heart surgery.

The 69-year-old's wife, Kristen, confirmed the news in a statement, adding that the singer/songwriter suffered a vocal cord injury during thew course of the procedure.

"Each day he is stronger than the last," she stated. "While he and his heart are doing well, the surgery resulted in vocal cord damage. While it is unclear if the damage is permanent, we are hopeful it is not.

"This past year has been a very stressful and difficult year for our family, to say the least. But despite all this, our gratitude for life trumps all obstacles we have faced at this moment.

"We feel so fortunate he’s alive," she added. "As does he. He looks forward to recovery and putting this behind him."

She also posted a photograph on Instagram of her husband with his throat in a bandage.

Fleetwood Mac are no stranger to bust-ups, and Buckingham was fired from the group following a falling-out a year ago with fellow band member and former girlfriend Stevie Nicks at the MusiCares Person of the Year gala.

His former band mates have publicly expressed good wishes to Buckingham, tweeting: "We are saddened by this news. Our thoughts and love go out to Lindsey and his entire family. We are hopeful for his speedy recovery."
