Watch: Irish history documentary Keepers of the Flame opens in cinemas

Keepers of the Flame, a new Irish history documentary, opens in selected cinemas from today, Friday December 14 - take a look at a clip here.

The feature debut from Emmy Award-winner Nuala O'Connor, co-written with historian Diarmaid Ferriter, Keepers of the Flame "tells the story of generations dealing with the consequences of war and civil war in Ireland".

It focuses on some of the people who made pension and dependents' allowance claims for active service during the period from Easter 1916 to the end of the Civil War.

The film features archive readings performed by Mary Black, Aiden Gillen, Áine Lawlor and Iarla Ó Lionáird, among others, with a soundtrack composed by Colm Mac Con Iomaire.

Keepers of the Flame is screening at the Irish Film Institute and Movies @ Dundrum in Dublin and at the Eye Cinema in Galway.

The screening on Friday December 14 at 6:30pm in the IFI will be followed by a Q&A with director Nuala O'Connor and co-writer Diarmaid Ferriter. The film will also be screening at the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle at 8:45pm on Tuesday December 18, with director Nuala O'Connor taking part in a Q&A afterwards.
