It's arrivederci to the superb My Brilliant Friend, Mrs Wilson and Home Rescue, with the Royal Variety Performance features some top talent . . .

Pick of the Day

My Brilliant Friend, 9.00pm, Sky Atlantic

This sumptuous adaptation of Elena Ferrante's first novel in her Neapolitan series of books has easily surpassed its lofty expectations. Only Killing Eve can compete with it in terms of best new TV show of 2018.

After tonight's eighth and final episode, we'll probably have seen the last of Gaia Girace and Margherita Mazzucco, who've been superb as the two young women growing up in 1950s' Naples.

I have no idea when season two is due, but it is definitely in the works. This is television at its most magnificent, and no mistake.
