Once Upon a Time star Victoria Smurfit has written a new comedy-drama series called The Box, which is centred on a female boxing gym in the Derry seaside town of Portstewart.

US entertainment trade website Deadline reports that Northern Irish production company Fired Up Films and Canadian media giant Entertainment One are developing Smurfit's series for television, with Northern Ireland Screen providing funding.

"We've been working with Victoria in LA on a factual series and she shared the idea for The Box," said Fired Up Films' co-founder, Simon Howley.

"We loved it and have been developing it with her for over a year."

Howley described Smurfit as "a great writer".

"We want to make positive, feel-good films about life in Northern Ireland, and prove great real-life drama can be set here - and that it's not just a world of fantasy and cops," he added.
