Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he auditioned to play Jack in Titanic, a role made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The actor recalled auditioning opposite Kate Winslet, who played Rose in the film, and thinking it went well.

"I went and auditioned for that. I wanted that," McConaughey told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I auditioned with Kate Winslet. Had a good audition. Walked away from there pretty confident that I had it. I didn't get it. I never got offered that."

McConaughey also looked back to his time starring in romantic comedies, before moving onto more serious, Oscar-worthy roles.

"They were fun. The pay was great. I was looking forward to them. I enjoyed going to work," he said.

"I was also living on a beach and going out without my shirt on, just like I did before I was famous. I was living a romantic comedy."
