The Office star Steve Carell has been cast opposite Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon in their new series about a morning television show.

The as-yet-untitled series from Apple TV "provides an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual".

The series is set to go into production in Los Angeles next week.

Steve Carell - Back in a television series for the first time since The Office

Carell will play a morning show anchor, Mitch Kessler, who is facing career challenges in the changing media landscape. It is his first television role since his Golden Globe-winning turn as Michael Scott in The Office.

Carell previously played TV weather presenter Brick Tamland in the Anchorman films and news presenter Evan Baxter in Evan Almighty.

Aniston and Witherspoon are among the executive producers on the series, which has received a two-season order.

It will be directed and also executive produced by Mimi Leder whose credits include The Leftovers, Shameless and ER.

Carell will next be seen on the big screen in the dramas Vice and Beautiful Boy.
