What's on? TV highlights for Wednesday September 19

It's a mix of romance and rescues on 9-1-1, Grand Designs is back, and Katherine Parkinson stars in a new comedy called Defending the Guilty . . .

Pick of the day

9-1-1, 9.00pm, Sky Witness & NOW TV

Ryan Murphy and co's latest – a prime time drama about first responders in LA – is one of the best pulse-raising shows of recent years. And the star cast of Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Connie Britton is superb.

This week's episode is a mix of romance and rescues, as a surprise marriage proposal goes awry with dangerous consequences.

As for the regular cast of characters, Athena (Bassett) attempts to help a desperate woman and in doing so unintentionally joins the Lonely Hearts Club, and then Bobby (Krause) and Chimney pull holiday duty and learn about the 'Casanova Fracture'.

Meanwhile, Abby (Britton) and Buck go on their first official date.

New or Returning Shows

Grand Designs, 9.00pm, Channel 4

Kevin McCloud returns for a new run of the show that follows intrepid individuals trying to design and build their dream home.

In Buckinghamshire he meets young Spanish architect Jaime and his wife Mimi as they embark on an epic mission to convert a Grade II-listed folly into a family home.

Originally designed to exhibit a fossil collection, but gutted by fire and left in ruins for the last 200 years, the crumbling mini castle offers a major challenge.

Defending the Guilty, 11.15pm, BBC Two

On later than other BBC Two regionals (check your TV service as it might be available at 10pm), this new comedy looks promising.

Will Sharpe (Flowers), plays Will Packham, an idealistic pupil barrister being shown the ropes by his cynical, worldly-wise pupilmaster Caroline, played by BAFTA Award winner Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Humans).

Mistakenly believing that his role is to serve justice, Will must navigate his way through a criminal justice system seemingly designed to be as opaque and confusing as possible, while also dealing with his back-stabbing fellow pupils.

Don't Miss

Trust Me, I'm a Doctor, 8.00pm, BBC Two
